by Jimmy and Ivan Cornell
Jimmy Cornell, experienced sailor and best-selling author, along with his son Ivan, has released a completely revised and updated third edition of Cornell's Ocean Atlas - the ideal companion for navigators planning a blue water cruise.
Since this atlas was first published 12 years ago, the impact of global climate change on the world's weather has increased significantly. In order to give the most accurate picture of the actual conditions prevailing in the oceans and vulnerable areas, the maps used in this atlas are based on the latest weather data recorded by a network of meteorological satellites over the last 25 years. The main focus in this completely revised and updated edition is therefore on all the changes that particularly affect trips at sea.
Most striking is the gradual decline in the regularity and reliability of the trade winds observed by sailors on some of the most widely used ocean routes. The most significant change, however, may be the increasing strength of tropical cyclones, lengthened hurricane seasons, and the increasing extent of areas at risk.
This phenomenon has such a strong impact on trip planning and safety in general that this atlas contains all relevant facts for all vulnerable areas in the world to provide a complete overview of the current situation. Hurricane-prone areas are highlighted in monthly maps based on hurricane tracks over the past decade. The question of safety has become even more important in trip planning today than in the past and this atlas should enable safe travel planning even in these changing times.
